Retro yellow inspired kitchens
May 17, 2008 — AmyI just love looking at old photos and illustrations of vintage and retro interiors. Although I live in a tudor style house, there’s no way I could ever pull off anything other than the style that it was created in. It wouldn’t go and to me you don’t put another era into a house other than what it was in the first place - it just looks better that way. However, if I did live in a retro/vintage house here are a couple of pics which would most definitely inspire me:

Note how the mother and daughter are wearing yellow plus the grapefruit seem to go with the interior. I wonder if people really planned things to be that way?

The above one is to me beautifully set out, I love the window - you can look out when doing the dishes but if they toned down the bright yellow I think it’d be alot less too bright on the eyes. What do you think?
So, what inspires you about decorating your home?

Great pictures, Amy. They reminded me of a house we looked at years ago in Calgary (dn’t buy it) with a lovely retro kitchen (huge, with a 50s fridge with one of those big handles) - I wish we had a kitchen like it. I love this kind of thing!
I hope you have a lovely weekend!

Lidian - I’d love a retro kitchen too. When I was growing up we had a big fridge like that - it was white.
Jen - care to share photos of your kitchen?

I have a real problem. I love anything old, which means that I have about 200 years worth of STUFF thrown in together. I love the really rustic stuff, paint chips and all. I love colonial American stuff, brown crockery and penny rugs. I love fiesta ware and jadeite and pyrex. If it’s old and cheap, we throw it in. We live in an old farmhouse so the eclectic mix kinda goes, I suppose. But whatever we live with we either use or play with…I like to think we keep the life in things.
I always wonder how women kept their hair in the hairstyles depicted above. It seems so soft and effortless, however, I’ll be darned if I could ever get may hair to behave like that!

I noticed how the mother and daughter were dressed alike. So cute.

Lidian sent me over. These are great pictures, but I agree that the yellow in the bottom photo is too strident. The house where I grew up was built in 1950, and we had a large yellow kitchen. Not too bright, just a pleasant buttery color.
Also, note the placement of the telephone in the bottom picture. How’s that for convenient? “Give me a sec, Gladys, to pour a cup of coffee. Then I’ll sit here on the linoleum so we can have a nice long chat.”
